Augusta, GA – The Augusta GreenJackets (47-30, 6-2) scored eight times Thursday night, but their lone run in the bottom of the first was all they needed as Daryl Maday and Wilmin Rodriguez combined on a four hit, 8-0 shutout to complete the three-game sweep over the Drive (43-35, 3-5).
Despite not recording a hit in their first at bat, the GreenJackets were still able to score a run off Greenville starter Chad Povich (5-2). Shane Jordan led off the inning by being hit by a pitch and eventually scored on a fielding error by Oscar Tejeda.
Povich would not allow an Augusta base-hit until the bottom of the fifth, but that’s when things took a turn for the worse. The GreenJackets recorded all nine of their hits in a two inning span, tallying seven runs.
Two runs scored in the fifth with one coming when Jordan hit into a double play with the bases loaded. Nick Noonan followed with an RBI-single for a 3-0 lead.
In the sixth inning, Augusta plated five runs on five hits for an 8-0 lead. Andrew Davis connected for an RBI double then Nestor Rojas and Charlie Culberson followed with back-to-back RBI singles. James Simmons brought home another run on an RBI single then Jordan capped off the scoring with an RBI single.
Maday (6-4) worked the first seven innings for the GreenJackets, allowing just three hits and a walk, while striking out four. Jered Stanley doubled, while Will Vazquez and David Mailman each singled off Maday.
Rodriguez tossed the final two innings, allowing the Drive’s fourth hit, another single by Mailman to secure the victory.
The Drive now travel to Asheville for a brief two-game series with the Tourists. First pitch for Saturday’s game is set for 7:05 PM as Greenville will send lefty Jose Alvarez to the mound. Asheville will counter with right-hander Connor Graham.
The Drive return home to Fluor Field on Sunday, June 29th. The seven-game home stand will have an “All-American Fest” theme. For more information regarding single-game tickets, ticket plans, group outings and luxury accommodations, visit www.GreenvilleDrive.com or call (864) 240-4500.
